The sun had just started to weave its way through the complex SkyLand Cluster as the lone figure stepped out onto one of the many platforms jutting out under the haphazard conglomeration she called home. The only other object on this platform was a single vehicle which despite its beat up, half finished look, she couldn't help looking at with a mothers pride. The shell had been salvaged from a sky speeder that had in its previous life been one of the sleekest models available though it had seen better days, her modifications designed to allow maximum cargo along with as much speed as she could muster gave the machine a half finished look. No matter how rough it looked her pride was based on the fact that she had built the vehicle completely on her own from scrap salvaged with her own hands.

Though the local militia in their sleek mass manufactured catamaran gunships never lost a chance to deride scrapper vehicles like hers, she wondered what they would think if she ever showed them how much power she was able squeeze out of her "Rustbucket".

Rudi was a petite young woman barely out of her teens, her orphan status didn't even give her a clan name to claim allegiance with. Many of the scrappers figured she was too young and too small for the dangers of scrapping. Her response was always to brush off those comments as irrelevant, as considering her position in society it is the only thing she can do short of begging on the streets, joining the military, or selling her body none of which was appealing to her. It was a sad state of affairs that if you don't have family your chances of owning enough surface to make a living farming are practically nil. Not that she would have any intention of settling down to become a farmer even if she could, she loved the thrills of the scrappers life too much to consider giving it up.
Rudi's hair was cut short in a boyish no nonsense cut, though it was seldom seen as she was never without the tight flying helmet that had become her trademark. Other than that she was wearing her usual outfit consisting of heavy ground boots with thick soles, trousers tucked into the thigh high boots and the long flying jacket which had been all the rage 50 years back but was now considered rather quaint, in all she looked like an anachronism from a bygone era but it was a look she liked over the more modern getups that either mimicked the military or the wealthy styles, both of which she sneered at.
Rudi plopped down onto her belly at the edge of the platform and peered out over the edge. The drop of a few thousand feet before her might phase most people but for someone who grew up playing tag in the latticed under-structures of these SkyLands, the height held no fears.
She scanned the horizons looking for any trace of old ground cities where perhaps a bit of metal or even better intact machinery, might be found. This was the purpose of her life to glean out the detritus of the human race's previous existence.
Once long ago people had populated the continents of the earth in the billions she had been told, and the evidence was there to see. So many crumbling ground communities that in the hundreds of years since mankind was forced to the skies there was still valuable metal for the civilian Scrappers to pick up wherever you looked. The metal was so valuable because it was now pretty much impossible to mine for new ore, and smelting (which was controlled by the military) had to be done on a very small scale.
The caustic mists that still roamed the surface of the earth had become more and more deadly and now was a death sentence to any who breathed it other than the Brutal half human creatures that somehow had developed a resistance to the stuff.
The Scrappers eaked out their existence, sometimes with the joy of the freedom it offered, sometimes with the dream of the one big score that would net them enough to buy their way into polite society. The life of a scrapper was hard, often fatal, if it wasn't the Creatures constantly stalking them on the ground it was the mist threatening to themselves.
